DEXA Scan vs. InBody®: Why Accuracy Matters When Measuring Body Composition

If you’re working hard to improve your health, build muscle, or lose body fat, one question matters more than almost any other:

How do you know if you’re actually making progress?

Many gyms and wellness centers offer body composition testing using bioelectrical impedance devices like the InBody®. They’re quick, convenient, and can provide useful information.

But if you’re making important health or training decisions based on those numbers, it’s worth understanding their limitations.

At Maze Medical Fitness Testing, we use medical-grade DEXA technology because when it comes to measuring body composition, accuracy matters.

What’s the Difference Between a DEXA Scan and an InBody® Scan?

Both tests estimate body composition, but they work in very different ways.

An InBody® scan uses bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). A small electrical current passes through the body, and the device estimates body fat, muscle mass, and body water based on how easily that current travels.

A DEXA (Dual-Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) scan uses two low-dose X-ray beams to directly measure lean tissue, fat tissue, and bone mineral density throughout the body.

Because DEXA measures tissues directly rather than estimating them from electrical resistance, it has long been considered one of the clinical reference standards for body composition assessment.

Why Hydration Can Change Your Results

One of the biggest limitations of bioelectrical impedance is that it’s highly influenced by hydration.

Your results can change depending on whether you:

  • Drank a large amount of water
  • Exercised before your scan
  • Ate a meal recently
  • Consumed alcohol the night before
  • Retained fluid
  • Tested at a different time of day

Even small changes in hydration can alter the electrical signal moving through your body, leading to different body fat and muscle estimates, even if your body composition hasn’t actually changed.

That doesn’t mean InBody® technology isn’t useful. It simply means consistency is critical, and results should be interpreted with those variables in mind.

Why DEXA Provides a More Reliable Baseline

When you’re tracking your health over months or years, consistency matters.

A DEXA scan provides detailed measurements of:

  • Body fat percentage
  • Lean muscle mass
  • Visceral fat
  • Regional muscle distribution
  • Bone mineral density

Because these measurements are far less affected by hydration than bioelectrical impedance, DEXA offers a more reliable way to monitor meaningful changes over time.

Looking Beyond the Scale

Two people can weigh exactly the same but have dramatically different body composition.

For example, someone who has gained muscle while losing fat may see little change on the scale, even though their overall health has improved significantly.

DEXA helps reveal changes that traditional scales simply can’t detect.

Why Muscle and Bone Matter for Healthy Aging

As we get older, maintaining muscle mass and bone density becomes increasingly important.

Research has consistently shown that higher muscle mass and cardiorespiratory fitness are associated with better mobility, greater independence, and healthier aging. Low bone density also increases the risk of fractures, which can significantly affect quality of life.

That’s why many adults are shifting their focus away from simply “losing weight” and toward improving body composition.

Who Benefits Most from a DEXA Scan?

A DEXA body composition scan can be valuable for:

  • Adults focused on longevity and healthy aging
  • People taking GLP-1 medications
  • Athletes monitoring training progress
  • Individuals beginning a fitness program
  • Anyone trying to lose fat while preserving muscle
  • Adults concerned about osteoporosis or bone health

Whether your goal is improving athletic performance or maintaining independence as you age, having accurate baseline data helps guide smarter decisions.

Build Your Health on Accurate Data

Technology has made body composition testing more accessible than ever, but not all testing methods provide the same level of precision.

At Maze Medical Fitness Testing, our medical-grade DEXA scanner gives you detailed, clinically trusted information about your body composition and bone health, helping you make informed decisions about nutrition, exercise, and long-term wellness.

If you’re serious about optimizing your health, longevity, or fitness, schedule a DEXA Body Composition Scan at Maze Medical Fitness Testing and discover what’s really happening beneath the surface.
